How can you avoid distracted driving?

by | Sep 25, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents, Personal Injury

Staying focused on the road is crucial for the safety of all road users, and distracted driving is a serious issue that claims thousands of lives each year. Unfortunately, the temptation to split our attention while driving has never been greater. What can you do to keep yourself, your passengers and others on the road safe?

1. Prepare before you drive.

Adjust your vehicle’s settings before you hit the road. Adjust your mirrors, climate controls and seat settings and choose your playlist or radio station in advance. This preparation allows you to focus solely on driving once you are on the road.

You should also know your route to reduce the need to make sudden decisions on the road. Use a GPS or map app to plan your route before you leave, and if you need to make changes, pull over safely to adjust your directions.

2. Put away electronic devices.

The most common source of distraction today is the mobile phone. Texting, browsing social media, or even just chatting can wait until you’re safely parked. Before you start driving, put your phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode or store it out of reach to resist the temptation.

You should also limit your use of hands-free devices and voice commands. While hands-free devices and voice commands are safer alternatives, they can still divert your attention from driving. Use these features wisely and minimize interactions that could lead you to become mentally distracted.

3. Avoid eating and drinking behind the wheel.

Eating or drinking while driving can be just as distracting as using your phone. If you’re hungry or need a coffee, take the time to stop and refresh yourself before continuing your journey.

4. Limit passenger interaction if possible.

Conversations with passengers can lead to significant distractions, especially for less experienced drivers. While it’s unreasonable to ignore your friends or family in the car, it’s important to keep interactions to a minimum and focus on the road.

Children and pets can be a particular source of distraction for drivers. Make sure children are buckled and pets are secured before starting your journey.

5. Stay focused.

Driving involves constant decision-making and situational awareness, and anything that takes your mind off the road can be dangerous. Avoid daydreaming and keep your mind actively engaged with driving. Techniques like narrating your driving actions (“I’m checking my mirror now,” “I’m slowing down for the red light”) can help keep your mind focused.

Managing your emotions can also help you keep your focus on the road. If you’re feeling upset or angry, it might be a good idea to calm down before starting your trip.

Distracted driving is preventable. By adopting these practices, you can limit the risk of car accidents and protect yourself and others on the road.
